Ranked Choice Voting in Google Forms
Google Forms has no ranked choice question type, but a multiple choice grid gets close: options as rows, ranks as columns, one response per column. What Forms can't do is count it. Here's the setup, the counting problem, and the free way to skip both — share one link, everyone drags the options into order, and TeamSort runs the count for you. No signup.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Forms do ranked choice voting?
Not on its own. Google Forms has no ranked choice question type. The usual workaround is a multiple choice grid with the options as rows and the ranks as columns, with Limit to one response per column turned on. That collects ranked ballots, but Forms only charts how many people put each option in each column — it never works out a winner.
How do I count ranked choice votes from a Google Form?
Link the form to Google Sheets and count it there. For instant runoff, tally every ballot's first choice, drop the option with the fewest, move those ballots to their next choice that is still in the running, and repeat until one option has a majority. For a Borda count, give each rank a point value and add up each option's points. Or collect the rankings in TeamSort instead: it runs Borda count, instant runoff or Condorcet automatically and shows the result as ballots arrive.
Why can voters give two options the same rank in my form?
Limit to one response per column is off by default on a multiple choice grid. Turn it on in the question's three-dot menu and each rank can only be used once. Require a response in each row is a separate setting that makes voters rank every option.
Can voters rank only their top three in Google Forms?
Yes: give the grid only three rank columns, keep Limit to one response per column on, and leave Require a response in each row off. Voters then pick a first, second and third choice and leave the rest blank. In TeamSort every voter ranks the whole list by dragging it into order, so every option gets a position on every ballot.
Can I move my Google Form's options into TeamSort?
Copy the list of options and paste it into the poll composer: a multi-line paste becomes one item per line. Share the poll link where you would have shared the form, and voters rank from any phone or laptop without an account.
Is TeamSort free?
Yes. A free poll needs no signup and takes up to 10 voters. It closes after 24 hours and its results lock, so download or copy the results as an image before then. Pro keeps polls open until you close them or until a date you pick, lifts the voter limit, and keeps the results.
